The Club Race Experience

by Chris Alvarado

When I was sitting on the board several years ago Caren Cooper announced that the Hill Country region would be co-hosting its first National Club Race with the Lone Star region. It never fully sank in for me what all that meant until that magic day came in 2006. I was amazed to learn that drivers flew in from Canada and Mexico to join us at Texas World Speedway. After all we aren’t the biggest region and this would be Hill Country’s first club race. I was certain we were going to fumble here and there. The event was a stunning success. Active planning for our 2009 race began this past November. There has already been several meetings and countless emails. The fun has begun! So what is a club race? It is, as I like to describe it, a Driver’s Education event with an IV drip of adrenaline. But more to the point most races consist of the race itself and a DE for solo-qualified drivers. Well that is what it is like for most races anyway unless of course you add our famous Hill Country touch!

This year we’ve stepped it up considerably to include events for everyone and not just the track junkie. The fun will begin Thursday with the arrival of most of racers and DE drivers. Now while that doesn’t sound too involved imagine a score of 18 wheelers hauling some of the fastest race cars in the Nation all dropping their gates and unloading their German beauties. Friday is when the event comes into full swing. Starting off with Practice and Qualifying the racers will enjoy “fun races” to get them in the competitive mindset. The DE drivers will enjoy their first of three days on track. Friday evening we will be heading over to the Messina Hof Resort and Winery for socializing and the telling of bold faced lies about who is the better driver. The evening will consist of a wine tasting and then a sit down diner.

If that wasn’t enough to call it a full weekend Saturday will give us our first day of Sprint Races. Crowds come from everywhere to watch these races. Each year people will gather on the outside of the high banks to watch the races and drool over German engineering. In the afternoon we’ll be joined by PCA members from all over Texas for our first Concours event. We’ll see just about every model made by Porsche pristine and ready for judging. A Concours awards ceremony will follow. Once that is complete the Sprint Race awards will be presented to the club racers along with several National awards. The day isn’t quite over yet. Celebrations will continue into the evening with music and dancing. Full race suits and flip-flops are welcome!

What about the children you ask? Of course we haven’t left them out. What would a PCA event be if we didn’t include the whole family? Razor® Races will be held on grid Sunday morning. All entry fees will benefit our region charities and winners will get to keep their scooters to take home. We hope you can join us for any of the weekend’s events. Endless smiles are guaranteed.

It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!
